Using the Quote of the Day in your classroom is a wonderful way to ignite reflection, critical thinking, and promote discussion. Each Daily Juice contains a carefully selected quote from a notable individual meant to inspire and engage students.

If you are looking for ways to encourage students to reflect on and discuss these quotes, we’ve put together a few ideas for you!

Class Discussion Starters

Utilize the Quote of the Day to foster social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and build a sense of community within your classroom. Challenge your students to contemplate the meaning of the quote and engage in discussions about its significance. You can either kick off your class with a group discussion on the quote or have students select their own quotes and discuss them in small groups. You’ll be amazed at how classroom discussions promote critical thinking skills.

Four Corners

This activity is perfect for building a sense of community at the start of the school year, semester, or throughout the academic term. Select four thought-provoking quotes and place them in different corners of the room, or project them on the board. Instruct your students to move to the corner of the room featuring the quote that intrigues them the most, resonates with them deeply, or prompts questions. Encourage them to engage in discussions with peers in their chosen corner. This activity can serve as a quick icebreaker or be repeated with additional quotes to keep the conversation flowing.

Journaling

To enhance SEL skills, have your students maintain daily journals for recording the Quote of the Day. Allocate a few minutes each day for reflection and personal writing about what the quote means to them and the connections they draw from it.

Research Inspiration

Leverage quotes as a springboard for research on notable individuals. Encourage students to select a quote that resonates with them or that represents someone they wish to learn more about. Students can explore the featured individual by reading the accompanying biography and then embark on a brief research project, utilizing search tools and other resources to gain insights into that person’s life and achievements.

One Pager

Unleash your students’ creativity by having them choose a quote from The Juice and create a one-page response. The one pager should be a creative written reflection on the quote, emphasizing their analysis, thoughts, and personal connections. Encourage them to include images or visuals to vividly convey their ideas.

Quote Gallery Walk

Print out a selection of quotes and place them on large anchor chart papers around the room. Organize a quote gallery walk where students explore these quotes in small groups or with a partner. At each station, students can read and reflect on the quotes, jotting down their thoughts on the anchor chart. As they progress through the gallery, they can build upon each other’s ideas and engage in dynamic discussions.

  3. I had a great time with that, too. Despite the high quality of the visuals and the prose, you find yourself eagerly anticipating what happens next. If you decide to defend this walk, it will basically be the same every time.
