The Juice Parent's Guide

What Is The Juice?

The Juice builds the strong readers of tomorrow with the current events of today.

Designed for grades 5-12, each weekday The Juice delivers five current events articles at four differentiated reading levels. Each article utilizes Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary words, and each story is followed by standards-aligned reading comprehension assessment questions.

Each issue includes infographics, SEL articles, and relevant video content. Our team of educators and journalists is dedicated to writing fresh, original content each day. By 6 AM EST, a new edition is published and you can access it either directly on our website at secure.thejuice.news or from the email you’ll receive in your inbox!

What's Inside?

Each edition of The Juice is built around 5 new articles written each day based on current news or cultural events. These are always surrounded by a set of supporting elements as listed below.

  • News Stories

    • Each issue includes five current event stories written at four differentiated reading levels, presented as overview cards.

  • On the Bright Side

    • One story each day is intended to inspire and motivate. Stories are broad and can include topics such as acts of kindness, an invention by a teen, community charity, etc. We aim to highlight empathy, social-emotional learning (SEL), and moral character.

  • Extra Juice

    • Some stories also include a link to an “Extra Juice,” indicated by an orange icon. Extra Juices provide the reader with more context or background information on a story or topic. These supplements are written in a question-answer format.

  • Vocabulary Support

    • Juice stories use a blue underline to identify important words. On average Juice stories include 10+ interactive vocabulary words in context each day. To access the definition and pronunciation of a word, children just need to click on the underlined word to bring up the definition and pronunciation.

  • Fresh Word of the Day

    • The Juice includes an overview card with a daily vocabulary word. This card features a sentence using the word and a single question to test the student’s comprehension. Students can also click on the blue, underlined word to view its exact definition and hear its pronunciation.

  • Quiz Questions

    • One standards-aligned reading comprehension question follows each article. These questions are unique to each reading level and assess how well a child comprehends the article. They are written to test specific reading comprehension skills. Kids receive explicit feedback after they answer each question.

  • Daily Poll

    • Every day, The Juice features a new poll that invites kids to share their opinions on a news story. These polls are a great way to spark meaningful conversations and get kids thinking!

  • Quote of the Day

    • Every edition of The Juice features a Quote of the Day, accompanied by a brief bio of the person who said it.

  • Video

    • Each edition of The Juice includes a short, engaging video that covers topics kids find interesting and exciting.

  • Fivesy

    • Fivesy is a fun word-guessing game that helps kids build their vocabulary. The words come from important vocabulary lists used in schools, and at the end of the game, kids can see the definitions and hear how they’re pronounced.

Reading Levels

At The Juice, we tailor every story and quiz question to match your child’s reading abilities. To ensure this, each story is written at four distinct reading levels:

  • 5/6: Suitable for 5th and 6th-grade readers.
  • 7/8: Suitable for 7th and 8th-grade readers.
  • 9/10: Suitable for 9th and 10th-grade readers.
  • 11/12: Suitable for 11th and 12th-grade readers.

Our team of educators meticulously designs each version to adhere to recognized reading-level standards. Factors such as article length, sentence complexity, and vocabulary are carefully adjusted to meet the developmental needs of readers at every level.

Your child’s initial reading level is determined during registration based on the information you provide. We’ll ask for details, such as their grade level, to set a starting point that aligns with their abilities.

Automatic Level Adjustment

By default your child’s reading level will be reviewed and adjusted based on their performance every month.

Here’s how it works: Each month, we evaluate your child’s engagement with The Daily Juice, including their quiz performance, reading patterns, and vocabulary growth. Based on this data, the system may adjust their reading level to better suit their evolving skills, either by increasing or decreasing the complexity of their articles and quizzes.

If you feel your child’s material is not suited to their current reading level, contact support and it can be adjusted.

How Kids Learn From The Juice

The Juice is a daily learning platform that delivers current events in a way kids enjoy—designed to feel like scrolling on social media. Kids don’t even realize they’re learning because they’re having fun exploring engaging topics, while powerful lessons are working in the background to help them grow as readers and thinkers. Here’s what’s really going on—things your child might not even notice but are boosting their skills every day:

Sentence Structure

The articles are written by education experts who carefully craft sentences to make them easy to understand while still challenging your child to think. By reading these well-structured sentences regularly, your child is naturally learning how to build their own sentences more clearly and effectively—without even realizing it.

Length

Each article is just the right length to hold your child’s attention without overwhelming them. This teaches them how to process and retain information in manageable chunks, which is a vital skill for both schoolwork and everyday life.

Learning Cause and Effect

The articles often highlight real-world events, explaining how one thing leads to another. For example, they might cover how a decision by a world leader impacts their citizens or how a local hero solved a problem in their community. This helps kids naturally learn cause-and-effect relationships, a key part of critical thinking.

Standards

The Juice aligns with what schools are teaching so it supports your child’s education seamlessly. Specifically, we follow the R1-9 standards, which are like a checklist of important reading skills that kids need to master. These include everything from understanding the main idea of a text to analyzing how different pieces of information fit together. By covering these standards in our articles, The Juice helps your child strengthen the exact skills their teachers are focusing on—without it feeling like more homework.

Why It Works

Kids are naturally curious about the world around them. The Juice uses current events to spark that curiosity, making learning feel less like a chore and more like an adventure. By combining engaging topics with smart teaching strategies, it helps kids build literacy skills in a way that sticks.

Vocabulary

Each article introduces new words in context, making it easier for your child to understand and remember them. To ensure your child is learning the most important words, we pull from the Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary word lists that schools use. Tier 2 words are those used across many subjects, while Tier 3 words are more subject-specific. The Juice also highlights a “Word of the Day” to give kids an extra boost in expanding their vocabulary.

Videos

To keep things fresh and exciting, we include daily engaging videos on subjects your kids love. These aren’t just for fun—they help visual learners grasp ideas more quickly and add yet another element of fun.

Why Kids  Love It

Your child gets to read about topics they care about, like sports, science discoveries, or inspiring stories, all while learning. And because a new edition is released daily, there’s always something new to explore. It’s a win-win: they stay engaged, and you know they’re growing their skills.
