Supporting Media Literacy with Accessible Current Events

THE CHALLENGE

When discussing department goals, social studies teachers at Oceanside High School recognized the need to create a media literacy elective to engage students with current events. However, when looking for resources to teach the course during a hybrid schedule model, Teacher Jason Manning struggled to find daily news content that was accessible for his high school students.

THE RESULTS

After finding and implementing The Juice in his media literacy course, Manning noticed the following results:

  • Increased Awareness of Current Events: Students developed an increased awareness of what is happening in the world with access to daily news at their level.
  •  Engagement & Discussion: Students made connections between what they were reading in The Juice and articles often sparked discourse among students.
